The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has issued a stern warning to electoral officials ahead of the Ekiti Governorship Election, declaring that any staff found manipulating results or compromising the electoral process would face severe sanctions.
Speaking during a meeting with INEC staff in Ekiti State, Prof. Amupitan said the commission would not tolerate actions capable of undermining public confidence in elections, stressing that the credibility of the electoral process must be protected at all costs.
He specifically cautioned Electoral Officers and other ad hoc personnel to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act, noting that the world was watching the commission closely ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the Ekiti governorship election would serve as a crucial test of the commission’s preparedness and integrity, adding that Nigerians expect nothing short of excellent performance from INEC officials.
The INEC chairman also urged staff to maintain professionalism and transparency throughout the election period, while assuring that officers who distinguish themselves positively during the exercise would be rewarded accordingly.
He disclosed that the commission was considering incentives, including accelerated promotions, for hardworking and dedicated personnel as part of efforts to encourage excellence within the system.
Prof. Amupitan further reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to staff welfare, revealing that steps were being taken to improve workers’ salary structure nationwide.
He, however, lamented the financial limitations facing the commission, saying the current envelope budgeting system had continued to affect its ability to provide the level of welfare support staff truly deserve.
