The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections in six states, in a move that underscores its ongoing preparations for key electoral activities across the country.

The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, during a ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where a newly appointed National Commissioner, Jamila Malafa (rtd.), was formally sworn in and received.

According to the Commission, the bye-elections will be held concurrently with the Ekiti State governorship election, covering vacant senatorial seats in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers and Ondo States. Additional polls will also be conducted to fill a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State.

“We are going into some off-cycle elections very soon. On the same date, the Commission will conduct bye-elections to fill vacant seats,” Amupitan stated, reaffirming INEC’s readiness to deliver credible and transparent elections.

The INEC boss described Rear Admiral Malafa as a seasoned professional, noting her prior contributions to electoral logistics and her experience as Director of Legal Services in the Nigerian Navy.

In her response, Malafa expressed gratitude for the reception and pledged her commitment to strengthening the Commission’s mandate.

“I look forward to working with everyone for the development and stability of our country, and for the success of forthcoming elections,” she said.
