The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has praised Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission for its proactive regulatory measures and commitment to consumer protection in the state’s electricity sector.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Mr Tunji Bello, gave the commendation at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja.
Bello said the Electricity Act 2023 had created a new regulatory landscape where State Electricity Regulatory Commissions would increasingly share responsibility with federal agencies, stressing that cooperation had become essential to safeguard consumers from unfair practices and ensure reliable service delivery.
He also lauded the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of KERC, Mr Ibrahim Abdwaaris, noting that other state regulatory commissions had a lot to learn from Kogi.
Bello called for closer collaboration among federal and state electricity regulators to ensure effective protection of consumers in Nigeria’s power sector.
He noted that while regulators might have different mandates, consumers were only concerned with reliable supply, fair billing and prompt complaint resolution.
Citing the suspension of the proposed replacement of obsolete Unistar prepaid meters as an example, the FCCPC boss said early collaboration prevented consumers from bearing extra costs.
Bello expressed confidence that stronger partnership among the FCCPC, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency and state commissions would foster a more accountable, consumer-centred electricity market.
He urged Electricity Distribution Companies to comply with directives promptly and encouraged consumers to use established complaint channels.
In his remarks, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of KERC, Mr Ibrahim Abdwaaris, who fully participated in the technical session, highlighted the progress made by the commission since its establishment in 2025.
He outlined various measures put in place to protect electricity consumers across the state and ensure fair service delivery by operators.
Abdwaaris reiterated the commission’s resolve to continue working with relevant agencies, traditional institutions and service providers to ensure efficiency, transparency and improved power supply for the people of Kogi State.
