The Federal Government has commenced a nationwide drive to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem with the inauguration of the country’s first Manu-Tech University Innovation Pod at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, as part of efforts to accelerate research commercialisation, industrial growth and job creation.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the Innovation Pod represents a new direction for higher education, where universities will serve as centres for innovation, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and enterprise development rather than institutions focused solely on teaching and research.

According to the minister, the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industry by creating an ecosystem where students, researchers, innovators, manufacturers and investors can collaborate to transform ideas into commercially viable products and businesses.

“Our universities must become the birthplace of innovation, manufacturing and enterprise. Education must no longer be separated from production, research from industry or knowledge from economic prosperity. That transformation begins here,” Alausa said.

He explained that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises education, industrialization, youth empowerment and economic diversification as key drivers of national development.

Alausa described the facility as a partnership involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and other stakeholders committed to expanding Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.

He noted that the Innovation Pod integrates artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing technologies, agro-processing, industrial automation, digital design and entrepreneurship, enabling innovators to move seamlessly from research and product development to production and commercialisation.

The minister said locating the facility in Abia State would leverage the manufacturing strength of the Aba industrial cluster, creating opportunities to combine local enterprise with university research and modern technology to improve the competitiveness of Made-in-Nigeria products.

He added that the initiative complements ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), including investments in STEMM education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), digital learning and research commercialisation.

According to Alausa, the Federal Government intends to replicate the Innovation Pod model across the country’s geopolitical zones, with each hub reflecting the economic strengths of its host region to stimulate industrial development, enterprise creation and regional productivity.

He urged students and researchers to utilise the facility to develop practical solutions to national challenges, commercialise their innovations and build globally competitive businesses capable of contributing to Nigeria’s aspiration of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with TETFund, UNDP, universities, industry and development partners to establish innovation ecosystems nationwide, ensuring that research outcomes translate into economic opportunities, industrial competitiveness and sustainable national development.
