The Federal Government has taken another step towards improving learning conditions in public schools by redirecting assets recovered from financial crimes to strengthen student accommodation in Unity Schools across the country.
The initiative, which saw the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) hand over hundreds of recovered hostel items to the Federal Ministry of Education, underscores the government’s strategy of converting proceeds of crime into investments that directly benefit citizens, particularly young Nigerians.
At a restitution ceremony in Abuja, the EFCC transferred 501 double-decker bed frames, 939 mattresses and 12 wooden beds with mattresses to the ministry for distribution to federal colleges.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the exercise as a reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that assets recovered from criminal activities are channelled into projects that improve the lives of Nigerians.
He said the administration is prioritising investments in education as part of its broader plan to build a one-trillion-dollar economy through human capital development.
According to the minister, rather than allowing recovered assets to lie idle or be disposed of without lasting impact, the government is deliberately deploying them to improve student welfare, strengthen learning infrastructure and expand access to quality education.
Alausa noted that the education sector has become one of the major beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s asset recovery programme, recalling that President Tinubu had previously approved the conversion of a forfeited university facility into the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.
He disclosed that the institution has already enrolled more than 3,000 students in programmes covering engineering, applied sciences, nursing, health sciences and other strategic disciplines designed to meet national development needs.
The minister expressed confidence that the newly recovered hostel facilities would significantly improve accommodation for students in Unity Schools and other federal educational institutions.
He also praised EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, for sustaining the Commission’s anti-corruption drive through professionalism, adherence to the rule of law and effective prosecution of financial crimes.
Earlier, Olukoyede revealed that the recovered items were seized during Operation Eagle Flush, one of the Commission’s largest cybercrime operations carried out towards the end of 2024.
According to him, the operation led to the arrest of about 792 suspects, including foreign nationals, who were subsequently investigated, prosecuted, convicted and repatriated after serving their prison terms.
He explained that the transfer of the recovered assets was carried out in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime Act and the Federal Government’s policy of ensuring that forfeited assets are transparently redeployed for public benefit.
The EFCC chairman noted that children and young people often bear the greatest consequences of corruption and financial crimes, making it appropriate that recovered assets should be redirected to support their education and future.
Olukoyede also highlighted the Commission’s previous contributions to the education sector, including the transfer of the forfeited university facility in Kachia and the deployment of recovered proceeds of crime as part of the seed funding for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
He disclosed that about 1.4 million students have already benefited from the student loan programme through tuition support and monthly upkeep allowances, reducing financial pressures that can expose vulnerable youths to cybercrime and other illegal activities.
The handover was concluded with the signing of a Deed of Release by representatives of the EFCC and the Federal Ministry of Education, including the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan.
Alausa assured Nigerians that the recovered hostel facilities would be distributed transparently and equitably to Unity Schools nationwide to improve student welfare, enhance accommodation standards and reinforce the Federal Government’s commitment to providing accessible, inclusive and quality education.
