The wife of the Kogi State Governor, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has distributed more than 3,750 school essentials to pupils and students across 27 schools in six local government areas of the state.
The intervention was carried out between September 28 and October 2 under the Back-to-School Empowerment Initiative of the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, founded by the First Lady.
The programme covered Adavi, Bassa, Dekina, Kabba, Koton-Karfe and Ogori/Magongo Local Government Areas.
The items distributed included school bags, books, calculators, mathematical sets, pencil cases, lunch bags, shoes and water bottles.
The Coordinator of the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, Mrs Mary Agamalafiya, who represented the First Lady during the exercise, led the distribution across the six local government areas.
The beneficiaries comprised children in nursery classes, Primary 2 to 4 and Junior Secondary School 1 to 3, while pupils and students in other classes also benefited in some of the schools visited.
A total of 27 schools benefited from the exercise, comprising six schools in Kabba, five each in Adavi and Dekina, four each in Bassa and Ogori/Magongo, and three in Koton-Karfe.
The intervention also provided an opportunity for interaction with teachers and school communities, with beneficiaries expressing excitement over the learning materials.
Among the schools that benefited were St Augustine’s College, Kabba; St Monica’s College, Kabba; LEA Oke-Offin Primary School, Bunu; UBE Secondary School, Edumo-Bunu; Comprehensive High School, Oke-Offin Bunu; and several other primary and secondary schools across the six local government areas.


In Adavi, beneficiaries included LGEA Standard Nursery/Primary School, Ikara-Woro Adavi; LGEA Standard College, Iresuha-Inoziomi; LGEA Catholic School, Ikara-Woro; UBE Secondary School, Iresuha Adavi; and LGEA Primary School, Iruvomi Karaworo.
Schools in Ogori/Magongo included St Peter Primary School, LGEA RCM School, Government Science Secondary School and UBE/JSS CMS Magongo.
In Dekina, the programme covered LGEA Central Primary School, Anglican Primary School, Islamiya Primary School, Government Secondary School and LGEA Model Science Secondary School.
The beneficiary schools in Bassa were LGEA Central Primary School, Bassa Model Secondary School, Bassa Model Nursery and Primary School and LGEA Islamiya Primary School, all in Oguma.
In Koton-Karfe, the outreach covered Police Children School, Government Science Secondary School and Community Girls Secondary School.
The initiative is part of the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative’s interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable members of society, particularly children and young people.
According to the organisers, the back-to-school intervention was designed to help pupils and students commence the academic session with basic learning materials and reduce some of the challenges faced by families in providing such items.
