A play writer and Former President of the Association of Nigeria Authors( ANA) Denja Abdulahi has called on students of Federal University Lokoja to maintain a deep connection with their cultural heritage.

Abdulahi made the call when students of One hundred and two hundred level of English and literary studies at the Federal University Lokoja staged his play at the school Auditorium.

The play, which delved into themes of power, leadership, and societal values, is based on an ancient Jukun myth from Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. which says a king must vacate the throne upon the appearance of grey hair, symbolizing the need for youthful leadership .

Addressing the student, Abdulahi stressed the need for them to use their youthful age to add value to the society through writing.

He encouraged the student to be creative custodians of their history using literature as a tool to chart a progressive future

According to the writer, students should always engage with texts, myth and dramatic arts not only as academic subjects but as a living conversations about the society.

Abdullahi appealed to the state government to focus attention on Art, Culture and tourism of the state which when properly harnessed can generate enough money for the development of the state.

He promised to build a residence for writers to be called Agbaja Plateau  where writers can come and share ideas for the betterment of the society

The Director of the play and also a Lecturer of Literary Studies and English at Federal University Lokoja, Doctor Aba Aba said the performance is part of the requirement for students of the department to pass the course and also put into practice what they have learnt in class.

On his part, the Chairman Association of Nigeria Authors Kogi State Chapter Mr Joel Tope Expressed happiness that the writer is one of their own and his work is making positive impact on the younger generation.

The ANA Chairman noted that the association will continue to partner with universities in the state to encourage young writers and develop Literary studies in schools.
