The Executive Director, Conscience For Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, Idris Miliki has expressed support for the Tax Reform Bills presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
Miliki made this known while speaking with our reporter in Lokoja.
On third of September this year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu transmitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly for consideration, following recommendations from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms led by Taiwo Oyedele.
The bills are the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024 -SB.583; the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024- SB.584; and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024- SB. 585; and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024 – SB.586.
The Executive Director, Conscience For Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, while speaking with our reporter, stressed the importance of tax reforms in boosting national revenue and fostering economic stability.
According to Miliki, most of those criticising the bills have not studied it.
“Many of us who are criticising the tax reform bills have not even taken time to go through the bills.”
“It’s an economic bill that is meant to raise more money for the government; it’s also meant to harmonise our tax system and bring some kind of prudence and decorum to our taxation regime in the country.
“I think it’s a document that has been crafted in a well-articulated manner and it deserves to be given proper attention, particularly when it’s an executive bill from the president.”
While noting that the debate on the tax reform bills should be conducted by people who are knowledgeable in the field, Miliki urged stakeholders to avoid introducing sentiments into the national dialogue.
