As Nigerians welcomed the New Year, a clarion call resonated across the nation, specifically directed towards its resilient women.
Director-General of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Hajia Lami Adamu Lau, issued a heartfelt message urging women to embrace a spirit of “purposeful action and unwavering resilience” in 2024.
Lau acknowledged the year gone by as one of “immense challenges and triumphs” for Nigerian women. She highlighted the hardships brought on by economic hardship, insecurity, and the lingering effects of the pandemic. Yet, amidst these adversities, Lau pointed to the “indomitable spirit” of Nigerian women, their unyielding perseverance, and their unwavering role as the bedrock of families, communities, and the nation itself.
As the calendar turned to a new chapter, Lau implored Nigerian women to approach 2024 with renewed vigor and a commitment to positive change. She outlined five key areas where women could make a significant difference:
Empowerment through Education and Skills Development: Lau emphasized the importance of prioritizing education and skills acquisition for both women and their daughters. Equipping themselves with knowledge and expertise, she argued, would be instrumental in navigating the evolving world and securing their rightful place in society.
Promoting Economic Self-Reliance: Encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit, Lau urged women to explore innovative ways to generate income and create wealth for themselves and their families. Building a network of mentorship, support, and access to financial resources, she suggested, would be crucial in fostering economic self-reliance.
Championing Gender Equality and Advocacy: Raising their voices against discrimination and injustice, Lau called upon women to work collectively towards dismantling harmful gender norms and ensuring equal access to opportunities and resources for all.
Building Strong Communities and Fostering Peace: Acting as agents of peace and reconciliation within their communities, Lau encouraged women to play a proactive role in promoting tolerance, understanding, and peaceful conflict resolution.
Mentoring and Inspiring the Next Generation: Sharing their knowledge, experiences, and wisdom with younger generations, Lau stressed the importance of guiding and empowering the future leaders who will shape a brighter tomorrow for Nigeria.
She said, “Let’s continue to fight and advocate against HIV AIDS. “it is becoming more worrisome especially to the younger generation”
Lau concluded her message with unwavering belief in the transformative power of Nigerian women. “I believe that Nigerian women have the power to transform our nation,” she declared. “Let us use this year as an opportunity to unite, amplify our voices, and take decisive action towards a more equitable and prosperous future.” With a resounding call to action, “Together, let us make 2024 the year of the Nigerian woman!”
