The Kogi State Police Command has arrested one Jacob Irewa for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze during a domestic dispute at Oworo Estate, Felele in Lokoja.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30pm.
It was gathered that trouble started after the victim burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she thought he was no longer using, without his consent.
In anger, the suspect allegedly threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and set her ablaze.
Spokesperson for the command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, said operatives of the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the attack and swiftly moved to the scene where the suspect was arrested.
Afusat said the victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at the Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
According to her, the suspect has confessed to the crime in his statement to the police.
She said, “The suspect, in his statement to the police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The command has commenced comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for domestic violence.
Kankarofi urged members of the public to seek lawful means of resolving domestic disputes and avoid actions capable of endangering lives.
He said the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.
