The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to recent allegations raised by a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging political actors to respect the rule of law and established democratic processes.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, addressed concerns raised earlier by a faction of the ADC associated with former Senate President David Mark. The APC leadership described the allegations as misunderstandings surrounding ongoing legal proceedings over the ADC’s leadership dispute.
According to the ruling party, Nigeria currently has several registered political parties capable of participating in elections, stressing that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not possess constitutional powers to deregister political parties or interfere in their internal affairs.
Basiru explained that the issues facing the ADC stem primarily from internal disagreements over its leadership structure.
He noted that the dispute has already become the subject of litigation before the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal (Nigeria).
The APC maintained that the Court of Appeal had dismissed an appeal filed by the David Mark–led faction, while directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of the substantive case at the trial court.
The party said the directive was aimed at preserving order and preventing actions that could complicate the judicial process.
The ruling party further noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acted in line with the court’s directive by maintaining neutrality and implementing the order to preserve the existing situation until the court determines the matter.
Basiru stated that if any party believes INEC misinterpreted the court ruling, the proper avenue for clarification remains the judicial process.
He encouraged political actors to seek legal remedies rather than resort to public confrontations that may heighten tensions.
The APC also advised caution in public commentary regarding the leadership and operations of INEC, noting that the commission operates within constitutional guidelines and its decisions are taken collectively by its leadership.
On the issue of planned party congresses and conventions within the ADC, the APC reiterated that all parties involved in the ongoing litigation should respect the court’s directive to maintain the status quo until the case before the Federal High Court is concluded.
The ruling party emphasized that adherence to judicial processes is essential for sustaining democratic stability, adding that court decisions remain binding until set aside by a competent court of law.
Basiru further encouraged political parties experiencing internal disputes to focus on resolving their differences through dialogue and lawful procedures. He noted that internal party challenges are not uncommon in democratic systems and can be resolved through established institutional channels.
The APC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, respect for institutions, and peaceful political engagement as Nigeria prepares for future electoral activities.
