Kogi State Government Pledges Increased Support for Grassroots Sports Development

The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of sports, particularly at the grassroots level, as part of efforts to promote unity, talent discovery, and youth empowerment across the state.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Aridaojo Monday Anyebe, gave the assurance during a football march held at Abejukolo, Omala Local Government Area.

Represented at the event by the Director of Sports Development, Mr. Paul Aje, the Commissioner described football as a unifying force that fosters peace, togetherness, and social cohesion within communities.

He emphasized that the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo remains committed to giving sports the attention it deserves, particularly in rural areas, emphasising that deliberate efforts are being made to ensure sports development in Kogi State and extends beyond the local level to national and international platforms.

Hon. Anyebe commended the organizers of the competition for their dedication to grassroots sports development and assured them of the state government’s continuous support and partnership in promoting sporting activities.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Omala Local Government Area, Hon. Ameh Mark, said the competition was organized to discover and nurture young football talents capable of representing the Local Government, the state, and Nigeria at large.

He noted that the tournament had generated excitement and enthusiasm among football lovers in the area since its commencement, describing it as a positive development for youth engagement.

Hon. Mark also commended the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development for revitalizing sports in the state and called on the people of Omala Local Government to continue supporting the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to ensure the dividends of democracy reach all communities.

The final match of the competition, played between Omala United and Ajadama FC, ended in a penalty shootout after regulation time.

Omala United emerged victorious, winning 4–3 on penalties.
