Former governors from Nigeria’s South East region have inaugurated a new platform known as the South East Former Governors Forum to strengthen cooperation and support development efforts across the zone.

The forum was formally launched on Tuesday in Enugu, with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and other former state leaders in attendance.

Speaking after the maiden meeting, Umahi said the body was created to support and advise serving governors in the region on critical regional and national issues.

“You must have been wondering what is going on. What was going on and is still going on is that we now have the birth of a forum of former South East governors today, April 7, 2026,” he said.

He explained that the forum would bring together former governors from across political parties who had served in the South East.

“The body is to support our presiding governors of the South East and advise them on key zonal and national matters. The forum shall be for all former governors irrespective of party affiliation, so far they have been governor in the South East,” Umahi stated.

The forum also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing development projects and federal appointments given to individuals from the region.

“We commend Mr. President very highly for the appointments given to sons and daughters of the South East and for the infrastructural revolution in the South East, just like what he is doing in other regions of the country,” he said.

Those present at the inaugural meeting included Sullivan Chime, Martin Elechi, Okezie Ikpeazu, Chris Ngige and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
