The Senate has resolved to summon the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede and Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Charles Igwe over alleged unwholesome practices by the Joint Admissions Board .
The Upper Legislative Chamber said the move is to curtail the practice of undisclosed admissions and other unwholesome practices by the Board and universities particularly the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).
The resolutions were sequel to a motion sponsored by the Deputy Whip, Senator Peter Nwebonyi representing Ebonyi North at the National Assembly.
Senator Nwebonyi in the motion, alleged that some JAMB officials in collaboration with Admission officers in the universities, are neck deep into unwholesome practice of shortchanging some students in the admission process .
He specifically cited the case of one Miss Chinyere Ekwe and 290 others who were admitted to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria Nsukka but had their admissions truncated on the order of JAMB for no plausible reason, after they had completed the admission processes and resumed lectures.
After the debate, the leadership of the Senate declined adopting any of the prayers recommended on the ground of weighty allegations raised which required thorough investigation but referred the matter to the committees on public petitions and tertiary institutions for further legislative action.
To this end, the trio are to appear before Senate committees on Public Petitions and Tertiary Education and TETFUND for explanations on alleged undisclosed admissions and unwholesome practices by JAMB and Universities , particularly the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Both committees are expected to report back in two weeks.
