A renowned Professor of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Prof. Etannibi Alemika says security agencies cannot solve insecurity challenges bedeviling the country.

Professor Alemika stated this at the 12th Public Lecture of the Federal University Lokoja with the theme “Combating Insecurity through Good Governance and Partnership Between Government and Citizens” held at the permanent site of the University.

Emmanuel Oluwakorede has details.

Government at the Federal, State and Local Government levels over the last two decades have continued to fight insecurity challenges ranging from insurgency, banditry, suicide attacks, Kidnapping and armed robbery.

While security agents have continued to tackle the challenges headlong, Prof. Alemika said they have no capacity to defeat the problem with the current level of poverty in the country.

According to him, bad governance which is the inability of the government to meet up with its constitutional responsibility to the people is the major cause of insecurity.

He maintained that the quality of governance is declining with high rate of corruption, hence the security challenges facing the country.

The Renowned Professor stated that Security of a country lies in the economic performance, quality healthcare, education and social protection.

He advised government at all levels to have a rethink in the approach of tackling insecurity by reducing poverty to the barest minimum.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Olayemi Akinwumi said the lecture is a platform for intellectual engagement, saying effective governance reduces insecurity.

The State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara rtd and heads of Security Agencies in the State among others attended the lecture.
