The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially sworn in Professor Adeniran Tella as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Oyo State, with a clear mandate to strengthen integrity and public trust in the state’s electoral system.

The oath-taking ceremony took place on Tuesday at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, where the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan administered the formal swearing-in.

Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. Amupitan described the appointment as coming at “a critical juncture,” noting Oyo State’s strategic political relevance.

“You are stepping into a position that demands utmost discipline and deep understanding of the task ahead,” he said. “INEC expects you to uphold the highest standards of transparency and professionalism. The success of our electoral processes depends heavily on the integrity of officials entrusted with responsibilities like yours.”

Reaffirming the Commission’s resolve to improve electoral technology and rebuild nationwide confidence, the Chairman stressed that the new REC’s performance would be under close scrutiny.

“There is absolutely no margin for lapses. Political actors, civil society groups, the media, and the electorate will all be watching. You must justify the trust reposed in you,” he cautioned.

He further charged Prof. Tella to engage consistently with stakeholders across the state. “Constructive engagement is vital. Establish strong working ties with political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, and community influencers. Effective collaboration eases election administration significantly,” he added.

In his response, Prof. Tella expressed gratitude to INEC for the opportunity and assured that he would serve with integrity.

“I am fully committed to fairness, accountability, and professionalism. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to credible elections in Oyo State,” he stated.

He also promised to promote peaceful participation and maintain open communication with all relevant stakeholders.

Prof. Tella will immediately assume duties at the Oyo State INEC office.
