Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Thursday flagged off the maiden edition of the Kogi Half Marathon 2026 in Lokoja, the state capital, describing the event as a strategic platform for youth engagement, unity, and peacebuilding.

The half marathon attracted athletes from over ten states in the country, with winners expected to go home with various cash prizes.

The race commenced at the Felele axis of Lokoja, passed through Crusher and Zone Eight, and terminated at the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre, Lokoja.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Ododo said the marathon was designed to showcase Kogi State as a peaceful and united state while promoting physical fitness and discouraging youth involvement in crime.

According to him, Kogi’s unique geographical position as the gateway between the North and South places a responsibility on the state to promote unity and peaceful coexistence.

“Kogi State is the only place where the Rivers Niger and Benue meet and flow as one without crisis. That alone teaches us unity.

This marathon is one of the strategies we are using to engage our youth positively and keep them away from criminal activities,” the governor said.

Governor Ododo emphasized that sports remains a vital tool for youth development, social integration, and crime prevention, noting that the Kogi Half Marathon would be sustained and expanded in subsequent years.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as inclusive leadership and for giving young people the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to governance.

The governor acknowledged the contributions of key state officials, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, security agencies, and Local Government leaders, for ensuring a peaceful and successful event.

“As we declare this marathon open, we are doing so for the fitness of our youth, the peace of our land, and the unity of our people,” he added.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Monday Aridaojo Anyebe praised Governor Ododo for creating an enabling environment for sports and youth development in Kogi State.

He noted that the marathon reflects the administration’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for empowerment, healthy living, and social cohesion.

The Kogi Half Marathon 2026 marks the first of its kind in the state and is expected to become an annual sporting event.
