The Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has reiterated commitment in tackling insecurity, mineral exploitation, infrastructure, and broader socio-economic challenges in Okunland.

Briefing journalists after meeting with members of Okun Development Association at the Government House, governor Ododo said the engagement was convened to address the rising wave of insecurity affecting Okun communities and other parts of the state.

He stated that the forum brought together respected Okun elders, retired security officers, technocrats, and community leaders who mean well for the development of our great state.

According to him, the stakeholders jointly examined the root causes of criminal activities, noting that unemployment, exposure to illegal mining, and divisions along ethnic and religious lines had worsened insecurity.

“We have been so divided along ethnicity and religious lines. We said enough is enough. We are coming together to protect the gifts God has given us,” he said.

“We will not bow, we will not negotiate, and we will not pay ransom. We will continue to sensitize our people to remain vigilant. And you can see we are winning the war.”

He added that despite the political differences in the state, Okun leaders acknowledged government efforts in tackling insecurity and pledged continued collaboration.

The President of the Okun Development Association, Akenson Rotimi, said the courtesy visit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on issues affecting Okunland and to appreciate the achievements of the current administration.

Rotimi explained that within three months of its new executive taking office, the ODA established four key committees including Constitution Review, Economy, Security, and Reforms to align with pressing challenges in the state.

“We are determined to partner with your government for the realization of the laudable objectives already set,” he said, while also thanking the governor for appointing Okun sons and daughters into key government positions.

The ODA president expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Okunland, citing rampant kidnappings, banditry, killings, and destruction of farmlands by criminal groups.

He applauded recent breakthroughs in security and the recruitment of additional vigilantes but noted that farmers still live in fear.

To complement government efforts, the President of ODA announced the establishment of the Okun Security Trust Fund, intended to support security agencies with equipment and logistics once fully operational.

Rotimi also urged the state government to empower Community Development Associations (CDAs) to foster collaboration between formal and informal security structures.

The ODA President decried the deplorable condition of major federal roads linking Okunland to Ekiti, Ondo, and Kwara states, noting their negative impact on trade and economic activities.

The association appealed for urgent government intervention either directly or through public-private partnerships alongside the construction of rural roads to boost agriculture and commerce.

Rotimi commended the administration’s improvement in salaries and pensions as well as palliative measures aimed at cushioning economic hardships.

On education, the ODA praised the establishment of Kogi State University, Kabba, and called for continued investment to make it a world-class institution.

He revealed that ODA North America recently donated ₦22 million worth of chairs and tables to support students, describing the gesture as an example of strong partnership with government.

While commending the recent grading of traditional stools, the group noted lingering complaints and appealed for fairness and peaceful resolution.

Rotimi also highlighted the financial constraints of the ODA, calling for government support through funding, vehicles, and logistics to enable the association to fulfill its mandate.

“It is our prayer that you and your cabinet will continue to enjoy peace and God’s favor as our state flourishes in these challenging times,” he said.

The highlight of the visit was the formal appointment of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo as the Patron of the Okun Development Association, an honor the group said reflects his commitment to the development of Okunland.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from both parties to tackle insecurity, improve infrastructure, and harness the vast mineral and human resources of Okunland for sustainable development.
