The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released new supplementary regulations to guide the review of election results, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.
The update follows growing calls for clarity on the Commission’s powers to review declarations made under questionable circumstances.
This was revealed in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, following the Commission’s weekly meeting on Thursday, July 3.
The new guidelines, titled Supplementary No. 1 to the Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022, outline clear procedures and timelines for reviewing election outcomes. “This step became necessary to ensure uniformity in interpreting Section 65 and to strengthen the integrity of our electoral process,” said Olumekun.
On party registration, INEC revealed that it has received 122 applications from associations seeking recognition as political parties, which includes 12 new submissions received as of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, adding to the 110 earlier announced.
The Commission said the applications are being processed transparently and in accordance with the Electoral Act and party registration guidelines. It also urged applicants to ensure consistency in their leadership and contact details, noting that one association has already changed its interim secretary.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, legal compliance, and timely updates to the public as Nigeria’s democratic process continues to evolve.
