The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun early preparations for the 2027 general elections, initiating internal reforms and technical reviews aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and improving the credibility of future polls.

Chairman of the Commission, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a visit to the INEC State Office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he met with staff and inspected voter registration centres.

The visit took place on the sidelines of a technical workshop organised by the Commission in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, where electoral officials gathered to review key aspects of election administration.
Addressing staff after the inspection, the

INEC Chairman said the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend largely on the quality of preparation and professionalism demonstrated by the Commission’s personnel.

He noted that Nigerians expect the Commission to deliver credible, free and fair elections and urged staff to uphold transparency, integrity and diligence in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, the Commission has already commenced strategic preparations through internal assessments, operational improvements and technical engagements designed to strengthen the electoral process.

Amupitan also stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the voter register, explaining that the ongoing voter revalidation exercise is aimed at eliminating duplicate registrations and removing the names of deceased persons.

He added that INEC would continue to collaborate with national data institutions such as the National Population Commission and the National Identity Management Commission to improve the accuracy of population data used in voter registration.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Obo Effanga, said the Chairman’s visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with staff and appreciate their efforts in implementing the Commission’s mandate in the state.
