The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, recording a total of 168,187 new registrants.

The disclosure was made in a press statement issued on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, following the Commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja

According to the Commission, this is the highest number recorded in two weeks in the state since the introduction of the CVR ahead of the 2017 governorship election.

A breakdown of the figures shows that 97,832 of the new registrants, representing 58 per cent, are female, while 70,355, or 42 per cent, are male. Youths aged 18 to 34 constitute the majority with 90,763 (53.97 per cent). In terms of occupation, 62,157 (36.92 per cent) are businessmen and women, while 44,243 (26.31 per cent) are students. Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) also featured in the exercise, with 303 (24.92 per cent) having physical impediments and 207 (17.02 per cent) living with albinism

INEC announced that the preliminary register of voters would be displayed for claims and objections in all 326 wards in Anambra State from Saturday, July 26, to Friday, August 1, 2025. After the verification and clean-up, the new registrants will be added to the existing register and published on a Polling Unit basis ahead of the governorship election.

The Commission further assured that Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of lost or damaged cards, would be available for collection before the election. “With 105 days to the election, the Commission is aware of the tight timelines but we wish to reassure all new registrants in Anambra State that their PVCs will be available for collection ahead of the election,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, INEC said it has received 10 additional letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications to 144. The details of these associations, including their names, acronyms, logos, and address and interim leadership, have been published on the Commission’s website for public information.

The Commission also disclosed that it has finalised tests on a new party registration portal designed and built in-house by its ICT officials. Evaluation of all letters of intent is ongoing to determine which associations meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage, and a full report is expected at INEC’s next regular meeting
