The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Christopher Maikalangu, winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election.
INEC’s AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, announced the result at the council collation centre, saying Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes to emerge victorious.
He said the total number of valid votes cast in the election was 62,861 out of a total of 65,197 votes cast, while rejected ballots stood at 2,336.
According to Abue, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finished third with 3,398 votes.
He added that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 voters accredited to participate in the election.
“Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Abue stated.
INEC further announced that candidates from 16 political parties contested the chairmanship poll, with votes spread across minor parties in single, double and low triple digits.
Party agents from the APC, ADC, APGA, YPP and NNPP signed the result sheets at the collation centre, indicating acceptance of the declared outcome.
Reacting to the announcement, APC collation agent, Gambo Babale, described the election and collation process as transparent and credible, congratulating Maikalangu on his re-election and urging him to deliver more dividends of democracy to residents of AMAC.
