The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has been honoured with the Award of Icon of Livestock Development in Nigeria by the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA). The award was presented during the Association’s Award and Dinner Night at the Government House in Lokoja on Friday.
Presenting the award, the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor said that the National President of the NVMA, Dr. Arokoyo Moses, said there is a strong connection between animal health and human health.
He explained that when animals are not properly cared for, human health is at risk.
He commended the Kogi State Government for its commitment to improving animal health, public safety, and for supporting veterinary doctors and small-scale poultry farmers across the state.
Dr. Moses appealed to the State Government to approve a three hundred thousand naira bonus for veterinary doctors, similar to what their counterparts in hospitals receive.
According to him, this will help reduce brain drain in the sector and improve performance.
He also called on the government to employ more veterinary doctors, noting that the current number of veterinary doctors in Kogi State is inadequate considering the large number of animals in the state.
In his acceptance speech, the Governor represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the NVMA for the recognition.
He described the honour as a strong endorsement from professionals who are directly involved in animal and public health.
He said the award belongs not only to him but also to veterinary doctors, the Ministry of Livestock Development, livestock farmers, and other stakeholders who are working hard to grow the sector.
According to the Governor, livestock development goes beyond animal rearing.
He noted that It provides food for families, creates jobs for young people, improves incomes, and protects public health. He noted that strong veterinary services help ensure safe meat and dairy products while preventing the spread of diseases between animals and humans.
Governor Ododo also commended the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for prioritizing livestock development at the national level saying Kogi State is aligning with this vision by strengthening veterinary services, supporting ranching initiatives, improving disease monitoring, and encouraging private sector investment.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in modern livestock practices and supporting veterinary professionals to ensure a healthy and prosperous Kogi State.
He assured members of the NVMA that the state government remains a strong partner in enhancing animal health, food safety, and economic growth.
