The highly anticipated 7-day Kogi International Carnival 2024 commenced on December 1, 2024, with Colourful opening ceremony. Guests began arriving as early as 9:00 am at the Muhammadu Buhari Square in Lokoja.
Themed “Come, Experience, Explore and Invest in the Confluence State,” the carnival aims to foster unity, promote tourism, create job opportunities and attract local and international investments. This theme resonates deeply with our aspirations for a prosperous state.
Throughout the 7-day celebration, events will take place simultaneously in four locations: Lokoja, Kabba, Okene, and Anyigba.
As the event progressed, dignitaries and guests were treated to a luxurious red-carpet reception. The atmosphere was colorful and captivating with cultural performances by various local troupes taking center stage. The air was filled with lively music, prompting attendees to dance with abandon to the eclectic mix of rhythms.
The Kogi International Carnival showcased a rich tapestry of cultural performances, featuring traditional dances and music from the diverse ethnic groups of Kogi State. Masquerades and hunter performances from each senatorial district added to the vibrant display. Student groups from various schools also impressed the audience with their synchronized calisthenics routines.
The renowned Nike Arts Gallery also made a notable contribution, presenting a breathtaking exhibition of traditional attire and cultural artifacts that added depth and richness to the cultural celebration.
The music talent hunt segment took center stage, with prizes awarded to the deserving winners. The crowd was then treated to a thrilling performance by Nigeria’s renowned Dance Hall artist, Timaya, who electrified the audience with his high-energy show, drawing everyone in with his infectious beats.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Joel Salifu Oyibo, officially kicked off the Kogi International Carnival at the opening ceremony. He expressed his delight and admiration for the event’s organization, praising the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon Mrs Acharu Okpanachi, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, the department of Arts & Culture, and supporters for their outstanding efforts.
The Governor expressed his enthusiasm for the Kogi International Carnival, describing the arrangement as “one of a kind.” He was thrilled to have unlocked the event and wished the people of Kogi, known as Kogites, a wonderful time, urging them to enjoy themselves to the fullest.
In her opening remarks, the Kogi State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon Mrs Acharu Okpanachi highlighted the significance of the carnival in showcasing the state’s unique cultural heritage globally and attracting investors.
She praised Governor Ododo for recognizing the importance of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and prioritizing it, acknowledging its substantial impact on the state.
The Special Adviser to the President on Arts & Culture, Ayo Adeagho, and the Special Adviser to the President on Digital & Creative Economy, Fegho John Umunubo, both praised Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for bringing the Kogi International Carnival to life. They emphasized the importance of arts and culture in society, noting that it’s not only a way of life but also adds value to the community. The duo commended the organizers for their hard work and promised federal support for future editions of the carnival.
Prince Philip Orebiyi, leader of the Kogi International Carnival 2024 project team, shared his insights on the carnival activities, describing it as “more than just a celebration.” According to Orebiyi, the carnival plays a vital role in promoting cultural exchange, community bonding, and showcasing Kogi State’s unique offerings to the world.
“The Kogi International Carnival is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of our shared humanity, and showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to the world. Visitors will have a unique experience that highlights our state’s beauty, talent, and investment potential. We invite everyone to join us for this unforgettable experience,” Orebiyi said.
Prince Orebiyi revealed that the Kogi International Carnival (KIC) promises to be an unforgettable experience, featuring an exciting lineup of events. These include spectacular performances by renowned local and international artists, vibrant cultural exhibitions, and traditional dance displays. Additionally, the carnival will showcase a food festival offering a diverse range of local and international cuisines, fashion shows highlighting Nigerian and African designs, as well as informative workshops and masterclasses on art, music, and entrepreneurship.
Juwon Demas Olorunnipa, also known by his stage name Jumabee, serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Kogi State on Arts and Culture. Notably, he plays a key role in organizing the Kogi International Carnival.
According to him, “Carnivals are a powerful way for societies to showcase their unique cultures and traditions, while also providing tourists with an immersive experience. The Kogi International Carnival is a prime example of this, and its establishment is long overdue considering Kogi State’s incredibly rich cultural heritage.
“By harnessing this potential, Kogi State can put Nigeria firmly on the global map. Carnivals around the world have been shown to contribute significantly to a nation’s cultural and economic development.
“In line with Governor Alhaji Ahmed Ododo’s vision, the Kogi International Carnival aims to become an annual event, highlighting the state’s untapped resources and sharing its fascinating history with the world. As one of the most significant states in Nigeria’s political and social development, Kogi has a lot to offer, and now is the perfect time to bring its stories to the forefront,” he said.
Jumabee added that the Kogi International Carnival (KIC) 2024 transcends a mere celebration, as its purpose is multifaceted, saying it aims to facilitate cultural exchange, foster community bonding, and showcase Kogi State’s distinctive offerings to the world. “This spectacular event is a joyous celebration of our shared humanity, proudly presenting Nigeria’s vibrant cultural heritage to a global audience.
“Visitors can expect an unforgettable experience that highlights the beauty, talent, and investment potential of our great state. We warmly invite everyone to join us for this extraordinary celebration, as we come together to showcase the very best of Kogi State,” he concluded.
The Day 1 Kogi International Carnival came to a close with a grand dinner night at the state’s Banquet Hall, hosted by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. The exclusive event brought together stakeholders, dignitaries, and renowned guests, including Timaya and Nike Davies-Okundaye of the Nike Arts Gallery.
During the dinner, prominent guests shared goodwill messages, focusing on the future of investment in Kogi State. The state’s Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Hon Bashiru Gegu, also led discussions on redefining the state’s potential in mineral resources.
The evening was filled with musical and cultural entertainment, showcasing the rich heritage of Kogi State. The event was a fitting conclusion to the carnival, celebrating the state’s diversity and promoting its investment opportunities.
Governor Ododo expressed his appreciation to the visitors and organizers of the carnival, and pledged to make significant investments in culture and tourism. He recognized the vital role these sectors play in boosting the state’s economy.
