A flash Flood has destroyed Apamai yam plantations worth millions of Naira in Iyara, headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.
One of the affected victims, Mr. Paul Adebayo told Radio Kogi in a Telephone Interview that the three days of heavy rain last week washed away all the yams which are almost ready for harvest.
According to Mr. Adebayo, most of the farmers are retirees, who collected loans to cultivate the plantation but nothing is left in the farm presently.
He described the disaster as unfortunate and worrisome, saying one of the farmers upon getting the farm to see the sad incidence, collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.
Mr. Adebayo noted that fifteen farmers including himself came together last year to cultivate the plantation but the hope of getting a bumber harvest has been dashed.
The farmer explained that with the disaster, repayment of the loan will be difficult with the present economic quagmire in the country.
He called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA) to come to their rescue towards cushioning the effect of the disaster.
