Kogi State Government has been urged to employ more teachers to address inadequate shortage of manpower in schools.
Chairman of the standing Committee of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, Comrade Emejeh Sunday made the appeal when he led officials on a visit to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters in his office.
Comrade Sunday enjoined the Special Adviser to use his office to address the acute shortage of teachers as well as urged government to look into the plight of teachers who have retired from service.
He however thanked Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for the laudable policies in the education sector, citing the payment of WAEC fees by the Government as a good example.
According to Comrade Emejeh, the payment of full salaries to Primary School teachers, minimum wage implementation, prompt payment of salaries and others stands the Governor out.
Responding, the Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Comrade Onuh Edoka while acknowledging that teachers play significant roles in societal growth, said they remain real assessors of educational development.
According to him, the present administration will continue to accord necessary attention to worker’s welfare, assuring that the requests of the Union will be presented to the appropriate quarters.
He noted that the door of the state government will remain open to various industrial unions in order to smoothen the project of good industrial relations in the State.
Comrade Edoka commended the immediate past Chairman of the Union, Comrade Ojo Ranti for providing purposeful leadership, urging the new leadership to build on the success stories of the past leadership.
