Chevron Nigeria in collaboration with Nigeria Union of Journalist NUJ has trained 30 journalist on capacity building and development to enhance their daily reportage
The training that took place on Monday in Abuja specifically for NUJ, FCT Council was embarked upon due to the value derived from human capital development, organization meeting up with the current digital journalism and safety in the workplace.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Esimaje Brikinn in a message said the training came about as a result of the value and the role of information played by media to enlightened the society.
Represented by the Manager, Communication, Victor Anyaegbudike, Brikinn commended media in generating quality content that enlightened the society, explaining that their role as agenda setters cannot be over emphasized.
“I want to thank you for your impactful role in reporting the oil and gas industry and providing effective perspectives to the complex industry operations.
“We continue to partner with the media for the development of the society. In this light, we also recognize the need for capacity building of the media practitioners to enhance their capacity to perform their duties. That is why CNL sponsors the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) programme in collaboration with the Pan Atlantic University.
The Managing Director informed that, such Programme will help to improve professional capacity and build lasting partnerships with media stakeholders, adding that same capacity building programmes is aimed at involving an increasing number of journalists in Lagos, Asaba and Abuja before the end of this year.
“We also recognize that the success of the larger society invariably translates to success in our business; and we believe it is in our long-term interest to add value to society as we create value for our stakeholders.
According to him, ”CNL seeks to make human investments that deliver long-term transformative returns. This is achieved through our Nigerian Content development activities. In Nigeria, Chevron supports Nigerian Content development by providing employment to Nigerians, and contract opportunities in all our projects up to an estimated annual average over $1 billion.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Osaretin Osadebamwen who commended Chevron for the collaboration said, the training is aimed at boosting the capacities of journalist and the use of the media to awaken national growth and development.
He noted that the training is in fulfilment of the Council’s desire to explore all opportunity for capacity training to members.
“It underscores our desire to continue to improve and sharpen our skills under the fresh start mandate designed to equip us further in our daily tasks – understanding the influence of the new media in our duty to society,”
